How to 3D Print SAFELY - Enclosure Exhaust Fan Calculation and Setup
There are countless videos out there discussing air quality concerns around 3D printing. My take is, if it is even the slightest concern or possibility, why not take as safe of an approach as possible. In this video I go over my calculated approach to create a safe printing enclosure given I print a lot of ASA material for my car projects and parts.

If you've been around 3D printing long enough, you'll know that 10 years ago, this technology was very far from what it is now. The 3D printer I finally added to my fleet is a prime example of this technology evolving and the price point adjusting accordingly. 10 years ago, a printer with this many features, for this price would have been unthinkable. Nice job but try editing it so you don't repeat yourself so much, hope your car turns out great and keep up the good work. I have same welder and I think my current dial is busted, does yours spin freely? Mine does which potentiometers usually don't do that as far as I know.. so might just need to replace it which I can do but it's just a pain to get at the dial on this machine.
my old 04 CL55 had a pascal engine
Haha that’s awesome! My C55’s engine served me well over the 8 years I had the car.
Good video, it's always nice to see people venting fumes for ASA/ABS as it's not the safest thing to be breathing in haha.
Thanks! Yea your health is the most important so do everything you can to lower the risk!
I too was using ASA to print car parts. But in my journey I learned a few things. 1.) Polymaker, and probably all hobby grades and materials are quite flammable. I did a few tests and there is no flame retardation or arresting. It likes to burn and pick up speed. 2.) It does not do well with fuel. It turns to a rubber gel. I learned this because I spilled gas on an old scrap part(total coincidence) and then went to pick it up about an hour later and it squished in my fingers. Point is, its probably not an issue for what your are doing, but its a good fyi- parts exposed to gas fumes, or maybe dripping oil etc. could lose rigidity and fail. For me, it was a good reminder that there is a difference between hobby and engineered grade materials. Anyway, nice enclosure. Using an wire shelf is a clever idea.
Wow thanks for this comment, I appreciate the insight! I knew ASA didn’t tolerate fuels well, but didn’t know it was that severe. Maybe I can do an upcoming video on fuel resistance testing different materials. What type of material did you end up going with? PETG was my next alternative. But I always had a lot of issues with it clogging the nozzles and it doesn’t have the same HDT that ASA does.
And yes you’re totally right about there being a defining line between desktop and industrial/engineering grade materials. For my full time job I print with ULTEM 9085, ULTEM 1010, and ANTERO 800NA everyday and there’s no comparison between those and desktop materials, but you need a very expensive printer to run them!
Solid. Love it man.
Thanks! Just wait, I’ll have an update video in the coming days where I take this toolbox to the next level as far as organization goes 😉
My lord 💪👊

Only question is what is the duty rating of the fan? Most of those fart fans can only be rated to run for an hour at a time…..
Yea that’s a good point, there’s no specs on the listing for it. I’ve been running it for 12+ hours at a time and haven’t heard it struggling or surging at any point. If it seems like it’s not up to the task, I’ll look for a more industrial solution on Grainger or McMaster Carr.
Could you link or give me consumer grade fan that has a duty cycle listed? I just looked at 4 different manufacture PDFs of different fans. Not a single duty cycle listed. I can't find the NEC or UL to back me up....but unless otherwise stated a fan is continues operation. I'm just wondering where you got this hour number. Maybe for something specialized moving hot, wet, dirty or maybe toxic air... Or maybe something from the past but... Even good manufactures like a panoramic whisper-quite bathroom vent has no duty cycle and only listed as 'continues operation' in marketing material.
need some control arms too
The classic “while you’re in there” often makes projects take much longer than originally anticipated haha

Hello, I'm from Poland and I'm building your vehicle. I'll probably finish it in mid-February. If you would like to see the end result, please provide your social media so that I can contact you ;]
Hello! That’s awesome. I’d love to see some pictures and share them on one of my videos. Please send me a message on my Instagram page, @addimotive.
@@Addimotive hey, I decided too quickly to send this message, I probably won't be able to never build this vehicle because I'm only 17 years old and I don't have enough experience in these matters, I really want to apologize to you for that, sorry
I don’t often comment on videos, but this one was particularly helpful. I just ordered a carbon fiber steering wheel from Overtakeauto for my 2004 C5 Corvette. Following the steps in this video made for an easy project and I was done in just over an hour start to finish. I did NOT need to use WD-40 on the splines as the wheel came right off with the puller I rented from O’Reillys. Thank you for taking the time and effort to make and post this video!
FYI...C&S Corvette in Sarasota FL...look for their video on batteries. Lyle talks about this very thing...the different batteries that you'll look at and depending on where you live i.e. very hot climate like down south..stay away from certain batteries like AGM..they're expensive and great but don't do well at ALL in hot weather.
did everything you did and mine would not come off, the steering wheel removal tool stripped its threads from tightening it so much. saw a comment about using a cigar torch lighter, might try that
Dang thats a bummer! Sorry to hear it’s so stuck. Heat is a good option for getting things to unbind, just be careful you don’t melt any of the surrounding plastic parts (clock spring). Also, did you let the penetrating oil sit and soak for at least like 12 hours?
FWIW I have mine routed through the gill so I can trickle charge mine without the hood popped open and it's easier to access. It's a bit of work to get it setup but great for those wanting a clean look.
Yea that’s not a bad idea as well 👍🏼
I have had no problem, but I went to a Diehard AGM battery two years ago. And if tray needs cleaned, simply remove it first.
@11:30 remember no matter how good we do in life, people will always have something negative to find about you regardless of how bad/well you are doing so what i like to say...f 'em. You keep doing you and nice video btw. nothing wrong with a clean tool box. That just means you are organized and clean.
Nice video, bud! I’m sure glad I got the AGM battery a few years ago, just had to install the LMC5 though, , and OEM shocks, deleting the mag ride F 55. , but I do wanna keep mine, I got a 2004
I there What oil should I run then if I live in Norway? Our climate is very different. In the summer it can be 25 Celsius and in the evening it will be around 12-17 Celsius. In the springtime it’s around 10-15 I drive a E55 AMG M113K. What oil do you guys recommend? Thanks in advance 😊
Thanks for that! Great work!
Bro pro tip...Just use a cigar flame lighter or a lighter torch. When I replace these I just heat it for maybe 30 seconds the metal expands and then cools and it comes off easily. Great video.
The organization of your toolbox makes my brain happy.
I have a question. When is a good time to use 12 pt sockets? From what i understand the strip bolts so why use them?
I’ve heard that too but honestly, I use them all the time and have never had an issue with stripping fasteners. The best time to use them is in tight areas where it may be difficult to get a wrench in position with only 6 points it can grab onto. I use the 12 point to get it mostly tightened down, then use 6 point when I need to apply more force, apply torque spec.
Pittsburgh pro s ockets the last time i checked are also made in taiwan.
Yes very similar in construction to Pittsburgh pro.
Cool idea. I moved away from the Phoenix area a couple years ago unfortunately. Now I have to put it away this time of year. I did place an order with you for them. Thanks 😎👍
Right on man, thanks for the order, I appreciate it! Will be getting it ready over the weekend, likely will ship out Monday or Tuesday! Have a great Thanksgiving 👍🏼
@Addimotive Thanks for the update. Hope your Thanksgiving was great too. 👍
For your socket organizers, one hack you could do is maybe drill a hole on each side of the organizer in the middle of them, then use a zip tie to hold it down so it's more secure. Not the best solution but I can see how that would get very annoying!
Thank you for filming this process. It helped a lot
Of course! I’m glad it helped 🤙🏼
The viper won any moment
🤙🏼🤙🏼
Asa is also printed best with a heated enclosure, you need a consistent temperature. This is especially true when doing long prints.
Yep I agree. I’ve been looking at getting some reptile heating pads to throw inside the enclosure. Although now I print ASA on my X1C mostly and it’s been printing really well.
Whats the exhaust?
Not too sure. After market down pipes for sure though.
I use a tender all winter (and anytime I'm not driving it) and never thought about running a spacer like that. Very cool idea.
Yea same, no true “winter” here in so cal, but I keep the car on a tender when I’m not driving it. Spacers have worked great so far 🤙🏼🤙🏼
AGM batteries can leak or seep, I had a older battery charger that was not going into trickle mode and it caused my 2 year old Optima to seep out of the vent holes on the side while charging my c5,Check your charger as well.
Hm interesting, I was told by multiple people that AGM batteries don’t leak because of the glass mat in the battery
I just bought the Creality K2 Plus. Seems like they waited just in time for Bamboo to release this and improved on it. Bamboo will most likely release an updated model to compete. Thanks for the vid!!!
I’ve heard great things about those printers too! Creality has been one of my favorites since I got into 3D printing. It’s good to have direct competition to keep driving innovation 👍🏼 Glad you enjoyed the video!
@@Addimotive Certainly!! In just 10 years the whole industry has taken leaps and bounds. I'm a 100% DIY guy but for all the tech they are now packing in these machines; I could not even come close on a homebuilt machine. Competition is good and I'm just amazed at what they are putting out year after year.
Good video but please try to keep things short. The internet is suddenly full of guys doing documentaries on their experiences.
Noted.
Great video! And I think you are right, this printer opens up 3d printing to the masses. I would have never messed with 3d printing before a device like this was available. I dont care about the "art" of 3d printing, I am just excited about the utility of it, as a tool!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. Yea it is truly a paradigm shift for 3D printing hobbyists and industrial users too! I always tell people, it used to be like people who liked to bake as a hobby but would have to worry about their oven working right. No one would want to bake anything!
Why are you testing the Auxiliary battery?? Why not the main battery in the trunk?? I thought the Auxiliary battery only did extra things like the electronic brake system and is seperate from the main cable?
The C55 only has one battery, under the hood on the passenger side firewall…. Not like other AMG cars that have one in the trunk, that’s why.
08243 3m smc repair can’t be painted over or body filler over it’s made for back side repairs with fiberglass over the top if I’m remembering it I use lord fuzor ez100 it’s a oem compliant for bonding and fixing voids and cracks
Based on what the application engineer from 3M told me, any of these repair epoxies can be painted over, so long they’re completely cured, the surface is prepped, and have the right primer sprayed over first.
@ ok I appreciate that
Blinker dead
Loose wire, goes in and out.
You’re making me motion sick. Nice organization in the box
lol yea sorry, camera I had before was not great for videos, new camera has stabilization feature so hopefully is better now!
trust me, i know its fun but 90% of those 3-4 shifts were not required. Number 1 thing i learned in racing school is don't make more inputs to the car than are absolutely required. This includes shifting. If you're holding it at 5k RPM, then hold it there, it won't hurt the car.
Thanks for the tip, I’ll keep that in mind next time I’m up doing a spirited drive like this! When I was learning to fly RC planes, it was the same advice, the less input to keep the plane flying where you want it, the better!
I kept this drive pretty conservative as this was my first time taking this car out on this road, so I definitely wanted to get a feel for the car on this road before I decided to "open it up" a bit more. Next time, if I don't get stuck behind so many cars, I'll let the car rip a little more :)
Can definitely appreciate the experience learned by doing this work yourself…. But dang you could have gotten a used bumper in perfect condition for far less than you have in all those 3M repair products!
Likely very true, but after failing at the bondo glass / bondo repair job, I was determined to fix this thing the right way. Plus it was great learning experience for the rest of the car since I had to buy materials for those pieces anyways and fix other panels in a similar way. Plus used bumpers are few and far between to find locally. I didn’t want to have to ship one from somewhere else because 9 times out of 10 they arrive damaged because they’re awkward things to ship.
Thanks for the information. This will come in handy when I finally get around to fixing up my 26 year old C5.
Of course! Let me know if you have any follow up questions once you get to doing the repairs 👍🏼
That was one of the problems that I was concerned about so I put a acid Matt. underneath the battery I did not see any problems with the battery putting an acid matt underneath the battery just a precaution
If you're not going to be moving them, you could epoxy those plastic socket rails down to the MDF base to keep them from flexing.
Appreciate your great & golden advice! Do you remember how heavy the C55 valve body was? I try to know if it's doable by one person. Thank you !
0:00-14:00: History of the C5 and the Materials the Body Panels are Made Of 14:00 - 38:06: Deep Dive Into the Body Repair Materials Throughout the Car
what number should I use to seal a crack in a door?
Once you groove out the crack and sand to give more surface area for the epoxy to bite, I’d use an SMC repair epoxy (like the one I showed in the video), but try to find one with a longer work time (50 seconds was not long enough). Then once you sand and smooth that down, I’d use the EZ sand epoxy over top of that to get your smooth top coat. If you can’t find an SMC adhesive with a longer work time, then the rigid parts repair should be a good epoxy to use in place of that. I used that to repair a giant crack in my front bumper (but I had access to the backside of the damage because I took the bumper off the car). Hope that helps.
You really like your sockets😂

@@Addimotive 😆
I have a C5 corvette 2003 model. The car is not driven much during the year so at times when it's not driven, the battery drains out quickly. I was told by a mechanic to install a circuit breaker for battery so whenever I want to drive, all I have to do is switch on the button for the breaker which would be installed connected to the battery so the power comes on in the car. When I am not driving, I would just have to switch off the circuit breaker button so the power switches off in the car. Please advise on this as I am new to this. Would appreciate your feedback.
As a first step, I would not recommend splicing in a kill stretch to disconnect the battery. What I would try first, which is much less invasive, is putting the car on a battery tender when you’re not driving it for weeks or months. A good quality one should be about $50-60. That’s what I use when my car sits for a bit, and my battery has held up just fine over the past 3 years. I use a tender made by the “battery tender” brand. If you have a parasitic drain caused by some electrical gremlin in the car, then the battery tender (and the kill switch) will just be a band aid until the source of the drain is fixed. Hope that helps!
@@Addimotive car is parked in basement so dont have socket to plug in battery tender. Any other recommendations
@@anskapadia1 run an extension cord? Otherwise, keep an 8 mm ratcheting box wrench in the car and just disconnect the battery as needed. Much less invasive than a kill switch.
